Dalton Whitfield Murray Retired Educators Association Scholarship

The DWMREA Scholarship Program continues to grow. Two $300.00 scholarships were awarded in our startup year of 2007. In 2020, we also expanded the program to include four $1,000.00 scholarships to Dalton State College students (who had attended one of our local high schools) and are preparing to be educators. In 2022, we gave eleven scholarships: seven to high school seniors and four to Dalton State College students. In 2023, we also gave eleven $1,100.00 scholarships: seven to high school seniors and four to Dalton State College students. We have given 89 scholarships to date. This year we will be offering up to seven $1,200.00 scholarships to graduating high school seniors. Additionally, there will be four $1,200.00 scholarships available to graduates of our Dalton City, Whitfield County, and Murray County Public Schools who are currently enrolled in the Dalton State College School of Education. As retired educators, our primary goal in this scholarship program is to encourage young people who want to become educators and who will best function in that role. As we evaluate our selection process, we feel that counselors and other staff of the high schools are in a much better position to make these choices. You know the students and are better able to interpret current transcripts and test scores. We ask that for the 2024 DWMREA Scholarship program you submit just one student to our committee. You are welcome to determine the selection process, but we ask you to apply the following:

• The selected scholarship applicant will be a graduating senior in a Dalton City, Whitfield County, or Murray County Public High School.

• The applicant must express in writing the intent to pursue a career in education. Completion of the essay requested on the application will satisfy this requirement.

• The applicant must have a minimum 3.25 unweighted GPA at the end of junior year.

• Evidence of work with children is preferred.

• Other criteria being equal, preference may be shown to applicants with financial need. Please have your selected nominee complete the attached scholarship application.

You should email it to Sally Little, chairperson (little.sally1@gmail.com) by Thursday, March 21, 2024. From the applications submitted, the committee will select up to 7 winners. We hope that with your input in the selection process, we will award our scholarships to outstanding students who will become quality educators in one of our schools.
