Cheerleading

High school cheerleading is a dynamic and spirited activity that combines athleticism, teamwork, and school pride. Our cheerleading team plays a pivotal role in boosting school spirit, supporting athletic teams, and fostering a sense of community among students, staff, and fans. From performing intricate stunts and high-energy routines to leading chants and cheers during games, our cheerleaders exemplify dedication and enthusiasm. Beyond the sidelines, they participate in competitive events, showcasing their skills at local, state, and national levels. Cheerleading is more than just an activity—it's an opportunity for students to build confidence, develop leadership skills, and create lifelong memories while representing their school with pride.

Head coach, Caitlin Autry

Hello, I am Caitlin Autry, currently in my 16th year of teaching. My cheerleading journey began in Dalton, GA, during my time as a student at Dalton Public Schools. I participated in cheerleading throughout middle and high school , and during this time, my profound love for the sport was ignited. After graduation, I attended Kennesaw State University and graduated with a degree in Education. After graduation, as I began my first year as a teacher, I also began coaching and pursued opportunities to further explore my passion for cheerleading. Though I do not have children of my own, I deeply value my role as a mentor to many "cheer daughters," each holding a special place in my heart. My educational background and early cheerleading experiences have significantly influenced my coaching approach.

With over a decade of coaching experience, I have had the opportunity to coach cheerleaders in various settings, from competitive cheerleading to sideline cheer for football and basketball. My coaching journey took off when I initiated the Cheer program at The Dalton Academy in the 22-23 school year. Witnessing the program and its athletes flourish has been incredibly fulfilling. Throughout the years, I have coached numerous talented individuals, some of whom have received cheer scholarships. My focus has always been on nurturing both their athletic abilities and personal development. Witnessing their accomplishments in their future pursuits has been the most rewarding aspect of my career.

Assistant coach, Ashlyn Waits

My name is Ashlyn Waits. My husband Jeremy and I have two beautiful daughters. Aria, and Ila Hope. I am a passionate educator and cheerleading coach with a deep commitment to fostering growth and confidence in both students and athletes. I hold a Bachelor's degree in Early Childhood Education from Dalton State College, a Master’s in Early Childhood Education, and a Specialist degree in Curriculum and Instruction, both from Piedmont University.

With a background in cheerleading from my early years through high school, I bring both personal experience and professional dedication to my role as Assistant Coach for the Spirit Squad. This is my second year in this role, and I have had the privilege of working with a great group of young athletes, some of whom have gone on to earn scholarships due to their hard work and growth. Watching these girls, many of whom began with little experience, transform into cheerleaders has been an incredibly rewarding experience.

As a coach and educator, I am excited to continue supporting the personal and athletic development of our team, as well as contributing to the vibrant spirit of our school community.
