This program will offer students the opportunity to develop their skills, compete, and represent TDA with pride. Michel Bates

Michel Bates is a distinguished tennis player and coach whose legacy spans decades of excellence in the sport. A trailblazer in Dalton, Georgia, she made history as the only State Champion in Dalton High School Tennis history in 1981. That same year, she represented the USA in the Junior Davis Cup, cementing her reputation as a rising star in tennis. Her high school achievements earned her a spot as an inaugural member of the Dalton High School Athletic Hall of Fame.

After earning a full tennis scholarship to Auburn University, Michel continued to shine on the national stage. She became an All-American once and received All-American honorable mention twice. She also earned All-SEC honors three times, establishing herself as one of the top collegiate players in the country.

Michel's coaching career spans over 30 years, with a strong focus on developing both youth and adult players. She served as the Head Coach of the Dalton State Tennis program for five years before the program was dissolved. For the last 18 years, Michel has been the Director of Tennis and Pickleball at Dalton Parks and Recreation, where her passion for teaching continues to inspire players of all levels.

Throughout her coaching career, Michel has mentored countless athletes, many of whom have gone on to earn college scholarships. One of her players is currently ranked in the Top 50 in the world. Michel’s love for coaching is unparalleled and she has made a lasting impact on every player she has worked with. Known for her genuine care and dedication, she is not only a skilled coach, but also a deeply caring mentor who strives to foster growth in every player, both on and off the court.

Summer Garrison

Summer Garrison

Summer Garrison is a dedicated educator and coach with a strong commitment to student development both academically and athletically. With a Master’s and Educational Specialist degree in Leadership from Tennessee Technological University, Summer brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to The Dalton Academy.

As a teacher of Special Education and Health/Physical Education, Summer is passionate about fostering a supportive learning environment and building relationships with all students. Beyond the classroom, she has extensive coaching experience, having led numerous basketball and softball teams to success. Currently, Summer is coaching flag football, where she will continue to instill teamwork, discipline, and sportsmanship in her athletes. She comes to The Dalton Academy with a winning mindset. 

A former college basketball player at Covenant College, Summer combines her athletic experience with a deep understanding of educational leadership to inspire students to reach their full potential, both academically and athletically. 

Summer has been a lifelong resident of Ringgold, Georgia, where she currently resides with her husband, Jerry, and their two sons, Cy and Lake. She discovered her passion for teaching and coaching at a young age, as she grew up watching her parents excel in the classroom and on the field/court. Inspired by their success and dedication, she knew from birth that she was destined to follow in their footsteps and pursue a career in education and coaching. Summer brings 18 years of teaching and 15 years of coaching experience to The Academy.
