Dalton Public Schools is proud to recognize Alba Gomez as Westwood School's Classified Staff Member of the Year. A dedicated STEAM teacher and first-grade paraprofessional, Gomez is known for her commitment to student success, her willingness to go above and beyond for her colleagues, and her deep involvement in the school community.
Gomez’s approach to teaching ensures that all students can actively participate and engage in learning.
“My lessons are always taught in a way that includes everyone,” she explained. “I demonstrate activities so students can see them in action and adjust my instruction as needed. In one of my first-grade classes, I taught in English, then translated into Spanish for one student, and even used Google Translate to communicate with a student who spoke Chinese.”
Beyond her classroom duties, Gomez is a trusted colleague who consistently supports teachers and staff.
“Most teachers I work with know they can count on me to get things done,” she said. Whether it’s teaching a specific STEAM lesson, assisting with classroom tasks, or even decorating doors, Gomez is always willing to help. “I like to make sure teachers know I’m here for them, and I’ll always do my best to support them.”
Her impact extends beyond academics—she works to create a welcoming and safe environment for students.
“I want to be the teacher students feel comfortable with and look forward to seeing each day,” she shared. One of her most cherished moments is greeting a student every morning who would run up to her for a hug. “That’s what I looked forward to every day.”
Gomez’s contributions to Westwood School go far beyond her teaching and paraprofessional roles. She actively supports school programs such as chorus, the school musical, and the After School Program. She has helped organize events like Field Day, the Christmas Sing-Along, and the school’s talent show. Last year, she even returned to the school in the evening to decorate with inflatable holiday decorations, creating a magical surprise for students.
Her dedication extends into the broader community as well. She has volunteered at Westwood Roundup for the past three years, participated in a summer Literacy Camp at Dalton State, and is currently pursuing her bachelor's degree in Elementary Education through the Para-to-Teacher program.
“I am thankful for this opportunity and look forward to giving back to the school district that I attended as a student,” she said.
Reflecting on the honor of being named Westwood School’s Classified Staff Member of the Year, Gomez shared, “It means so much to know that my work is recognized by my colleagues. I love what I do, and I’m grateful for the chance to support both students and teachers every day.”
