DALTON, Ga. — The Dalton Education Foundation is proud to announce Meredith Andersen of Dalton High School as the recipient of the 2026 Hale-Bowen Excellence in Teaching Award.

Established in 1999 by Clifford G. and Kathryn R. Hale, the award recognizes an outstanding teacher in Dalton Public Schools who exemplifies excellence in instruction, educational leadership and a deep commitment to students. Clifford Hale served as superintendent of Dalton Public Schools from 1945 to 1969, and the award was later renamed to also honor Charles Bowen, who served as superintendent from 1969 to 1975.

Each year, the recipient is selected by students in the Hale Chapter of the National Honor Society at Dalton High School. Students evaluate nominees using criteria they developed, including dedication, effective instruction, originality and creativity, respect for students, willingness to help, enthusiasm, involvement in extracurricular activities, classroom management, and the teaching of high moral and ethical values.

For the past 11 years, Andersen has made a meaningful impact on students, colleagues and the Dalton High School community through her dedication to high-quality instruction, teacher leadership and student growth.

ā€œMeredith Andersen has served Dalton Public Schools with distinction for eleven years, consistently demonstrating a deep commitment to student learning, professional growth, and the advancement of her school community,ā€ said James Wickes, assistant principal at Dalton High School. ā€œOver the past year in particular, Ms. Andersen has emerged as an influential teacher leader whose impact extends far beyond the walls of her classroom.ā€

Andersen serves as English department co-lead, where she has become a trusted advocate for high-quality instruction. In this role, she works collaboratively with colleagues to strengthen instructional practices, support departmental alignment and cultivate a culture of professionalism and shared growth.

She also serves on the Dalton High School Building Leadership Team, where she collaborates with colleagues, contributes to schoolwide decision-making and helps shape a vision focused on continuous improvement and student success.

In the classroom, Andersen designs meaningful learning experiences that encourage students to connect deeply with literature and engage authentically with the world around them. Her instruction reflects creativity and purpose, fostering an environment where students feel challenged, supported and inspired to think critically.

In addition to her classroom and leadership responsibilities, Andersen coaches the GHSA Literary Team, creating opportunities for students to develop confidence, sharpen their talents and represent Dalton High School with pride.

ā€œHer willingness to invest in students both academically and personally exemplifies the spirit of educational excellence,ā€ Wickes said. ā€œMs. Andersen’s leadership, instructional expertise, collaborative mindset, and unwavering commitment to students make her exceptionally deserving of the Hale-Bowen Excellence in Teaching Award.ā€

On behalf of the Dalton Education Foundation and the families of Clifford Hale and Charles Bowen, Andersen will receive the 2026 Hale-Bowen Excellence in Teaching Award and a $3,000 award.

Dalton Public Schools congratulates Andersen on this well-deserved recognition and thanks her for the lasting impact she continues to make on students, colleagues and the Dalton High School community.
