In honor of Black History Month, Dalton Public Schools is highlighting staff members who make a meaningful impact in their schools and communities. Michelle Long, District Attendance Improvement Specialist, plays a vital role in supporting students and families by helping remove barriers to attendance and ensuring students have the opportunity to thrive academically.
For Long, Black History Month is a time of reflection, purpose, and appreciation. āBlack History Month is a time to honor the resilience and contributions of those who came before us,ā she shared. āPersonally, it reminds me to appreciate my roots. Professionally, it inspires me to serve with purpose and help create opportunities for students to succeed and reach their full potential.ā

Weathers currently serves as an eighth-grade math teacher at Dalton Junior High School and has been part of Dalton Public Schools since 2018. Throughout her career, she has taught sixth, eighth, and ninth grade mathematics, including both general and special education courses. She holds a bachelorās degree in Secondary Education in Mathematics from Jacksonville State University and a masterās degree in Middle Grades Math and Science from the University of North Georgia.

As they listened, students discussed key elements of the biography and answered questions about Rubyās life, challenges, and impact. Through this story, students learned important lessons about courage, perseverance, and how one person can help create positive change. š
