DALTON, GA - Dalton High School’s theater department is bringing the Tony Award-winning musical Hadestown to life in a production that promises to be both groundbreaking and unforgettable. This marks the first time the show will be performed in the local area, offering the community a rare chance to experience a musical of this caliber on the high school stage.

Under the direction of Alana Sane, Dalton High School Drama Director, the production will feature the largest set in the school’s history and a live orchestra fully integrated into the performance. The public is invited to attend on Friday, December 13, at 7 p.m., and Saturday, December 14, at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m., at the Dalton High School auditorium. Tickets can be purchased at dhsplayers.ludus.com for $15 per adult and $10 for students and seniors (ages 55 and up).

A Collaborative Achievement

The entire cast and crew have worked tirelessly to create a production that is not only visually stunning but also emotionally resonant. Hadestown is a story that explores themes of love, sacrifice, and redemption through the lens of Greek mythology, making it a powerful challenge for high school performers.

“We’re incredibly proud of the dedication and effort that every single student has brought to this production,” said director Alana Sane. “From the actors on stage to the orchestra and the crew behind the scenes, this show is truly a team effort. Everyone has poured their heart into making Hadestown something special for our community.”

A Spotlight on Talent

The production shines a spotlight on the talents of graduating seniors Hayden Poe, Ellis Stephens, and Kinsley Stephens. Hayden Poe, who received the Best Leading Performer award at the Georgia High School Musical Theatre Awards (Shulers) for his role in Fiddler on the Roof last spring, shared his enthusiasm for the project.

“Our set is absolutely incredible—it’s the biggest we’ve ever had,” said Poe. “The story of Hadestown is so unique and moving, and we’re privileged to be among the first high schools to tell it, especially here in Georgia.”

Kinsley Stephens echoed Poe’s sentiments, emphasizing the emotional resonance of the show. “The relationships in Hadestown are what make it magical. It’s a story about love, kindness, and forgiveness, and I’m excited for audiences to feel the magic we’ve created together,” Stephens said.

Ellis Stephens noted the importance of the live orchestra, which plays an integral role in the performance. “Our orchestra is part of the set and the story itself. They are their own character, acknowledged by the cast and integrated into the world of the show,” he explained.

A Community Effort

The live orchestra, directed by Riley Hooper, Dalton High School Choir Director, is a cornerstone of the production, featuring some of Dalton High School’s most talented band members. “Not every high school has the resources for a live orchestra, and we’re incredibly fortunate to bring this to life,” said Poe.

The orchestra’s unique role in Hadestown adds a layer of authenticity and depth to the performance. “The licensing agreement for Hadestown highly encourages the use of live music,” said Ellis Stephens. “Our team has gone above and beyond to meet that standard, making this production even more special.”

Beyond the technical elements, the production is a testament to the dedication and talent of the entire Dalton High School community. “We’ve been given the freedom to dream big,” Poe remarked. “This program is a testament to the hard work of everyone involved, from underclassmen to seniors, and we’re so proud of what we’ve achieved.”

Why You Should Attend

With its bold themes of love, redemption, and the resilience of the human spirit, Hadestown is a story that resonates across generations. The production not only showcases the immense talent of Dalton High School’s theater department but also serves as a celebration of community collaboration and artistic excellence.

The seniors, all of whom will continue their theater journeys in college, expressed pride in the legacy they leave behind. “There is so much potential here at Dalton High School,” said Poe. “With incredible directors like Alana Sane and Riley Hooper, the program is set to continue its tradition of excellence for years to come.”
